Welcome Incoming Students!

The UC San Diego Analytical Writing Program offers a range of lower and upper division writing courses to help students master the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that they will use at the university and in their professional lives.

For those who have not yet fulfilled the University of California’s Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), we offer these credit-bearing ELWR-fulfilling courses:

Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)

All UC students must fulfill the ELWR within a limited timeframe. For FA23 incoming first-year students: You will receive an email in May, asking you to complete an ELWR survey by May 15, 2023. In the survey, you will have the opportunity to register for the Writing Placement Process (WPP) that takes place on June 6, 2023. 

If you have fulfilled the ELWR with a test score or a college composition course, you must send the official test scores or final college transcript to UC San Diego so you can be exempt from taking the WPP. Visit the ELWR page for details. 

If you have not fulfilled the ELWR, you must complete the WPP on June 6 Visit the Placement page for details. 

Before the fall quarter starts, you must either fulfill the ELWR or be placed in an AWP course by the WPP.
